We are pleased to announce that our long-time Friend and supporter, Susan Kessler is celebrating her 100th birthday this year —almost exactly on our season opener. And what a fabulous gift that her friends have organized; they are sponsoring the Emerson Quartet concert season opener in her honour!
We recently reached out to Stuart Alcock, another Friend and supporter, who organized the tribute, along with Ric and Lynda Spratley and David Pay of Music on Main to find out a bit more of the back story.
“The idea of sponsoring a Friends of Chamber Music performance emerged very quickly once we learned that the Emerson Quartet would be playing just four days after Susan’s birthday. Susan regularly attends musical events — Vancouver Recital Society, the Vancouver Symphony, the Vancouver Opera and Music in the Morning as well as the chamber series — so it seemed appropriate to acknowledge her role in the music loving community”.
Alcock received nineteen cheques representing 27 of Kessler’s friends.
“This was the easiest fund-raising effort I have ever been involved in — and reflects the great affection people feel for Susan”.
“To me, Susan represents the sheer joy of aging well. She is good humoured, sharp witted and full of warmth. She has many friends, not just from her interest in music, and treats every one of them with care. I feel privileged to be a part of her circle”.
So tonight, we revel in the Emerson Quartet’s performance of Ravel’s quartet, the single most popular piece of music over the 66 seasons of our concerts. You can also enjoy music by Britten and Liebermann, and celebrate her 100th birthday with Susan Kessler and her friends.
If you, or a group of your friends would like to sponsor an upcoming performance, please contact us at [email protected] or by phone at 604-437-5747.
